A Planning Inspector has granted outline planning permission for up to 150 new homes on land off Main Street, Birdham, following a public inquiry. The 8.74-hectare site, promoted by Gladman Developments, will deliver a significant proportion of affordable housing alongside new public open space and measurable biodiversity improvements.
The scheme has since been purchased by Redrow Homes (now Barratt Redrow), with the Reserved Matters application for 140 dwellings approved by Chichester District Council in July 2025.
The development occupies a sustainable location within easy walking and cycling distance of day-to-day services including a primary school, retail outlets, and regular bus services to key employment centres. Active travel improvements and a community park form part of the approved scheme.
Gladman’s planning team worked closely with specialist consultants to demonstrate that the benefits of the proposal — including the provision of much-needed market and affordable homes, open space, and ecological enhancements — significantly outweighed any identified harm.
